ARLINGTON, Texas — The No. 10 seed Miami Hurricanes defeated the No. 2 seed Ohio State Buckeyes 24-14 in the 2025 College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the 90th Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic before a crowd of 71,323 at AT&T Stadium.
Miami (12-2, 6-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) set the tone early with consistent defensive pressure, stymying Ohio State's rushing attack and disrupting multiple first-half possessions. The Hurricanes' defensive front controlled the line of scrimmage, recording five sacks and seven tackles for loss, which contributed to the Buckeyes' difficulty establishing offensive rhythm.
A pivotal moment came in the second quarter after Ohio State (12-2, 9-0 Big Ten Conference) reached the red zone following a 59-yard completion. On the ensuing play, Miami senior defensive back Keionte Scott intercepted a screen pass and returned it 72 yards for a touchdown. The score extended Miami's lead to two possessions and shifted momentum heading into halftime.
"It was on film. I shot my shot, but that goes to trusting my brothers and coaches," Scott said. "I was full of emotions. I looked to the sideline to let them know what type of timing I was on."
Miami also held the advantage in the trenches, finishing with 153 rushing yards compared to Ohio State's 45 yards on the ground. The Hurricanes sustained several long drives, using their ground game to control tempo and time of possession.
"We keep getting better and better up front," Miami head coach Mario Cristobal said. "We played a very strong defensive tea and we had to be that good. Our players kept responding and coming with a counterpunch."
Senior quarterback Carson Beck provided efficiency in Miami's passing attack, setting a Cotton Bowl Classic record with 13 consecutive completions. The mark surpassed the previous record of 10, set by Oklahoma's Landry Jones against Texas A&M in the 77th Classic in 2013.
Ohio State missed a field goal attempt to end the first half but opened the third quarter with consecutive touchdown drives, cutting the margin to 17-14. The Buckeyes leaned more heavily on the passing game during the comeback effort, while the Hurricanes continued to emphasize a run-heavy approach to manage the clock.
After a strong start to the second half, the Buckeyes' offense was unable to generate additional points down the stretch, as Miami's defense continued to apply pressure and force stalled possessions.
