ARLINGTON, Texas – John T. Stuart III, a longtime member of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association's Board of Directors who served as Chairman from 1990-92, passed away on May 27, at his home in Dallas at the age of 85.
Stuart was a graduate Highland Park High School, University of Texas at Austin, SMU Southwestern Graduate School of Banking and Harvard Advanced Management Program. He built a career in the banking industry, most notably during his three-decade stint at Republic Bank/First Republic Bank of Dallas, where he retired as president in 1988. He moved on to executive roles with Alpert Investment Company, Guaranty Bank and Belmont Interests until he retired.
The lifelong Dallas resident was a distinguished alumnus and avid supporter of the University of Texas. He was as a Life member of the University's Development Board in Austin and Dallas and served on several advisory councils at UT Austin. He was heavily involved in heavily involved with civic activities and community engagement in North Texas, notably volunteering time with the Boys Scouts of America. Stuart served on a number of other boards, including the Executive Board of North Texas Public Broadcasting, YWCA, Florence Foundation, Summer Musicals and African American Museum and was a lifetime member of the Salesmanship Club.
He is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Barbara Kay White Stuart, his son John Michael Stuart, his daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and George Pettit Macatee IV, grandchildren, George Pettit Macatee V and wife Kailee, McBride Macatee Oden and husband Madison and John Stuart Macatee and John Michael Stuart II and two great grandsons Madison Lee Oden III and George Pettit Macatee VI.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 7 at 2 p.m. at the Highland Park Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the
Callier Center,
University of Texas John T. Stuart III Centennial Chair in Business Administration,
Circle Ten Council and
Boy Scouts of America.
