ARLINGTON, Texas – Vince Dooley, one of college football's greatest head coaches, passed away at his home in Athens, Ga., on Friday, Oct. 28, at the age of 90.

Dooley served as head coach at the University of Georgia for 25 years from 1964-88 where he compiled a career record of 201-77-10. The former Marine brought a unique blend of military discipline and strategy to the coaching profession. He guided Georgia to six Southeastern Conference titles, the 1980 national championship, and 20 bowl appearances.

He led the Bulldogs to victory in two of his three trips to the Cotton Bowl Classic. Dooley's Junkyard Dawgs rolled over SMU 24-9 in the 31st Cotton Bowl Classic in 1966. However, it was Georgia's visit to the 1984 Classic that Dooley enjoyed the most.

A defensive struggle for much of the day, a fumble recovery on a muffed punt return late in the fourth quarter put Georgia in position to pull off a major upset over No. 2 Texas. The Bulldogs took over at the Longhorns' 23-yard line and in three plays scored the winning touchdown. Georgia claimed a 10-9 victory and denied Texas an opportunity to win the national championship.

The fourth winningest head coach in SEC history, Dooley became Georgia's Director of Athletics in 1979 and held the position until his retirement in 2004. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994.
