ARLINGTON, Texas – Lynn Amedee, named Most Valuable Player of the 27th Cotton Bowl Classic in 1963, passed away at the age of 83 on Tuesday, May 20, in his hometown of Baton Rouge, La.
Amedee, who shared MVP honors with Texas' Johnny Treadwell, helped LSU shut out the previously unbeaten Longhorns 13-0 on New Year's Day 1963. Amedee did a little of everything to take his Tigers to victory – kicked two field goals (23 and 27 yards), one extra point, passed for 94 yards connecting on nine of his 13 attempts, ran for 10 yards and recovered the fumble on the second-half kickoff that resulted in the only touchdown of the day.
A multiple-sport athlete in high school and college, Amedee was also a pitcher for LSU baseball's 1960-61 SEC Championship team. He played football professionally in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Eskimos. Amedee went into coaching following his playing days and coached on both the college and professional levels. His college coaching stops included LSU, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Southwest Louisiana (now Louisiana at Lafayette), Texas A&M, Florida, Texas and Mississippi State. His professional coaching stops included the National Football League's New Orleans Saints and World Football League's Birmingham Americans.
