ARLINGTON, Texas – Steve Worster, one of the Cotton Bowl Classic's greatest legends, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 13 at the age of 73.

Worster, affectionately called "Big Woo", was a two-time All-America fullback at the University of Texas and was the foundation of a record-setting time in Longhorn history. A tremendous, short-yardage runner and a devastating blocker, he was a key component in the Longhorns' drive to winning three consecutive Southwest Conference championships from 1968-70. Those titles led to three celebrated New Year's Day appearances in the Classic.

The Texas Wishbone was conceived to maximize Worster's strength and power at the point of attack by offensive coordinator Emory Bellard. At the direction of head coach Darrell Royal, the Wishbone triple option revolutionized college football in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

In that era, the Longhorns won two national championships and chewed up 30 straight opponents to compile the greatest victory total in Texas' illustrious football history.

Worster was sensational in the 1970 Classic, bulling through Notre Dame defenders for 155 yards on 20 carries to help pave the way to a 21-17 victory. It secured the national title for the Longhorns and brought down the curtain on college football's 100th anniversary season.

The Texas football superstar was inducted into the Cotton Bowl Classic Hall of Fame in 2003. He also was enshrined in the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor, Texas Sports Hall of Fame and Texas High School Football Hall of Fame.
