ARLINGTON, Texas – Former UCLA head football coach Terry Donahue passed away on Sunday, July 4, at his home in Newport Beach, Calif. He was 77.

The winningest coach in UCLA and Pacific-12 Conference history, Donahue guided the Bruins to a 17-3 victory over Arkansas in the 1989 Cotton Bowl Classic. UCLA became the first West Coast team to play in the North Texas bowl game since 1949.

His Bruins were sensational against Arkansas on defense, holding the Southwest Conference champions to a field goal and 42 yards in total offense. Seven of the Razorbacks' 10 possessions ended in three downs or less, and the Arkansas offense never advanced past its own 41-yard line.

Offensively, Donahue and the Bruins rode the arm of senior quarterback Troy Aikman, who at one point in the game converted 13-of-14 third-down plays. UCLA drove 93 yards in 19 plays for its first touchdown, and then came right back on its next possession to roll 74 yards in 10 plays for another score to take a 14-0 halftime advantage.

The Bruins logged 371 yards in total offense that day and controlled the football and the clock for almost 43 minutes. It was Donahue's first victory over an SWC opponent. With the win over Arkansas, he also became the first college head coach to record bowl victories in seven consecutive seasons, four of which came in traditional New Year's Day matchups.

Donahue's teams set a UCLA school record with 151 victories (151-74-8) and won or shared five conference championships. His teams finished first or second in Pac-12 standings a total of 12 times. From 1982-88, the Bruins recorded seven straight Top 20 finishes in the final wire service polls.

Donahue was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
