ARLINGTON, Texas – Emmett Augustus "Duke" Carlisle III, named Most Valuable Player of the 28th Cotton Bowl Classic in 1964, passed away at the age of 84 on Friday, Oct. 2.
Carlisle shared MVP honors with fellow Longhorn Scott Appleton in Texas' 28-6 victory to seal the 1963 national championship, the first for Texas. He only connected on seven of 19 passes but threw for 213 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 54 yards in the triumph over Navy, led by quarterback Roger Staubach.
Growing up in Athens, Texas, Carlisle was a multi-sport athlete who could do absolutely anything with a football in his hands. He committed to play football at Texas under legendary head coach Darrell K. Royal. His football career continued in the NFL, drafted the Green Bay Packers and traded to the Dallas Cowboys. After his NFL career ended, he returned to Austin to earn a Master of Business Administration.
His post-football career included time with the Army's Medical Service Corps and stints as an investment banker with Merrill Lynch and in the oil business. In 2018, he wrote Longhorns and Tall Tales, a collection of humorous short stories that offered readers a glimpse of 1960s-era football and life. He dedicated the book to his Longhorn teams from 1961-63.
Carlisle was inducted into two Halls of Fame – Texas Athletics Hall of Fame in 1974 and Cotton Bowl Classic Hall of Fame in 2000. The field house at Athens High School was named for him in 2008.
