| 10/27/2006 | CLASSIC TEAMS UP WITH THE V FOUNDATION The holiday season is about to kick off, and it starts with National College Football Day… a holiday created by the AT&T Cotton Bowl to commemorate the birth of college football. This third-annual celebration will be observed on Saturday, Nov. 4th. National College Football Day takes on added significance this year. The AT&T Cotton Bowl has partnered with The V Foundation for Cancer Research to increase awareness about men’s cancers. The V Foundation, based in Cary, N.C., is a charitable organization dedicated to saving lives by helping to find a cure for cancer. The Foundation seeks to make a difference by generating broad-based support for cancer research and by creating an urgent awareness among all Americans of the importance of the war against cancer. The Foundation performs these dual roles through advocacy, education, fundraising, and philanthropy. “Everyone knows someone affected by cancer, and considering over 1.4 million people will be diagnosed with cancer this year alone, I can’t think of a better organization for the AT&T Cotton Bowl to be aligned with than The V Foundation for Cancer Research,” said Bruce Gadd, Chairman of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association. “By teaming up with The V Foundation, we can help further their important cause while joining forces to make National College Football Day a nationally observed holiday each year.” The annual holiday observed on the first Saturday of November was developed as a way to pay tribute to a significant moment in our nation’s history. On Nov. 6, 1869, Rutgers defeated Princeton, 6-4. More importantly, those college athletes left a lasting legacy that would evolve into the great spectacle of football. To honor college football’s 137th birthday, the AT&T Cotton Bowl and The V Foundation have produced limited edition lapel pins that will be distributed to hundreds of coaches, athletic directors, university presidents, sports publicists and media throughout the United States. “We’re honored to be selected as the charitable partner of National College Football Day, which we know will help bring attention to the need for cancer research,” said Nick Valvano, CEO of The V Foundation. “I also want to thank all the members of the college football community, including the coaches, for lending their credibility and visibility to the celebration of National College Football Day and embracing The V Foundation and our mission of funding cancer research.” For more information on National College Football Day and to learn more about The V Foundation for Cancer Research, please visit www.NationalCollegeFootballDay.com. |
| 10/19/2006 | PAT SUMMERALL SET TO CALL 2007 CLASSIC The remarkable and legendary broadcasting career of Pat Summerall opens a new chapter this coming January when the longtime Dallas resident re-enters the broadcast booth to call the AT&T COTTON BOWL CLASSIC, Monday, Jan. 1 (11:00 AM ET) on FOX. The announcement was made today by FOX Sports President and Executive Producer Ed Goren. Summerall's analyst for the broadcast will be announced at a later date. The 2007 AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic is FOX Sports’ ninth consecutive broadcast of the celebrated event, and kicks off an exciting New Year’s day-night college football bowl doubleheader. The day culminates in prime time with the debut of the BCS on FOX and the TOSTITOS FIESTA BOWL live from Cardinals Stadium in Glendale, Arizona (8:00 PM ET). “The Cotton Bowl is the perfect opportunity to get Pat back in the broadcast booth," said FOX Sports President Ed Goren. "There are times when you make a decision and it puts lots of smiles on lots of faces. This is certainly one of those decisions and we could not be happier to have Pat broadcast this event." “I am very grateful to my friends at FOX Sports for providing me with this assignment," said Summerall. "Some of my fondest sports memories occurred at the Cotton Bowl and I am looking forward to returning to one of the most storied venues in all of sports." “Pat Summerall is a true icon in American sports,” said Bruce Gadd, Chairman of the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic. “He has covered virtually every major sporting event in the world during his career. It’s exciting to think of the added dimension that Pat will bring to our game. This clearly shows the level of commitment that FOX has for the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic.” Summerall is no newcomer to the Cotton Bowl broadcast booth. He called the 1964 game with the legendary Chris Schenkel on CBS and was the analyst for the 1967 game between Georgia and SMU, also on CBS, where his booth mate was play-by-play announcer Jack Drees. It was also the only time the game was played on New Year's Eve. Summerall's Hall-of-Fame broadcasting career began in 1961. Since then he’s broadcast 15 Super Bowls on network television, more than any other announcer. He and his longtime partner John Madden teamed for 22 seasons, the final eight of which as FOX Sports’ lead NFL broadcast team. He last called NFL in 2004 for ESPN. Drafted by the Detroit Lions, Summerall’s professional football career began as a place-kicker and tight end with the NFL’s Chicago Cardinals in 1952. He was traded to the Cardinals before ever playing for Detroit, and he played in Chicago from 1952 through 1957. He concluded his career with the New York Giants from 1958 through 1961, and he played in the 1958, '59 and '61 NFL Championship games. Summerall’s kicks accounted for five points in the legendary 1958 Championship Game, which the Giants lost 23-17 in sudden death to Baltimore, a game that later became known as “The Greatest Game Ever Played.” Born George Allen Summerall on May 10, 1930, in Lake City, Fla., Summerall has three children. He currently resides in Southlake, Texas, with his wife, Cheri. |

| 08/30/2006 | AT&T NEW YEAR'S PARADE - DELIVERED! A New Year's tradition is returning to Big D. AT&T Inc. announced plans for the AT&T New Year's Parade on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, in downtown Dallas. Mayor Laura Miller, AT&T representatives and other dignitaries unveiled the official logo for the new parade during an event at the Dallas Museum of Art. Preliminary plans call for an afternoon parade on Ross Avenue from the Arts District to the Historic West End. Immediately following the parade, university bands and cheerleaders will lead AT&T Cotton Bowl pep rallies in downtown Dallas. Parade organizers expect that the AT&T New Year's Parade will have approximately 60 entries, including the Kilgore College Rangerettes, floats, equestrian units, the AT&T Cotton Bowl university bands and nearly 20 high school marching bands from across the country. "AT&T is proud to have our southwest headquarters in the heart of downtown Dallas" said Jose Gutierrez, president and CEO, AT&T Southwest. "With the center city renaissance and redevelopment occurring all around us, we believe that this is the right time to bring back a family-oriented New Year’s parade to the Metroplex" "I join thousands of other North Texans in expressing my appreciation to AT&T for restoring a great holiday tradition in downtown Dallas" said Dallas Mayor Laura Miller. "The AT&T New Year’s Parade will help ensure that downtown Dallas is the place to be on New Year's Eve." According to the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau, the AT&T New Year's Parade should help boost the local economy during a crucial week for local hotels and restaurants. "The addition of a high-profile community event during AT&T Cotton Bowl week means that some visitors will arrive earlier and spend more money in Dallas than they might have otherwise," said Phillip Jones, president, Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau. "The AT&T Cotton Bowl already is one of the largest annual events for our city, and the addition of the AT&T New Year’s Parade further elevates the week’s importance for our city." For nearly four decades, thousands of North Texans rose early on New Year's Day to attend the annual Cotton Bowl Parade. The event was discontinued in the early 1990s shortly after CBS decided to stop televising the parade. The AT&T New Year's Parade will differ from its predecessor in several ways, including name, date, and time. The parade will occur on the afternoon of Dec. 31 rather than on New Year’s Day morning, providing potentially warmer weather and another day of activities during AT&T Cotton Bowl week. The parade will be produced by the newly formed J. Curtis Sanford Parade Committee, enabling the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association staff to focus on the Jan. 1 bowl game. The volunteer-led J. Curtis Sanford Parade Committee is named for Cotton Bowl founder and Dallas oilman J. Curtis Sanford, who spent his own money to start the New Year’s Day game in 1937 for the purpose of showcasing Dallas. Sanford’s widow (Betty), daughter (Betty Crawford) and son-in-law (John Crawford) attended the press conference and commented on how the AT&T New Year’s Parade aligns with the Cotton Bowl founder's original intentions. "The J. Curtis Sanford Parade Committee and the AT&T New Year's Parade continue my father-in-law's vision of celebrating Dallas with the world" said John Crawford, chairman, DOWNTOWNDALLAS and president of client services at Jackson Walker L.L.P. "The family-friendly parade is yet another reason why it's a great time to live and work in downtown Dallas" For additional information on the AT&T New Year's Parade, including sponsorship and volunteer opportunities, go to attparade.com. |
